my special place #3Posted by Kathryn (Warburton, Australia) on 9 November 2008 in Landscape & Rural and Portfolio. Here is the final of my images to do with Kylie's theme, though I feel that I could extend this series forever! This image was taken earlier this year while I was living and working in the wilderness of New Zealand's Westland region. This view of the Haast landscape is from Ships Creek, a rest stop about a 20 minute drive from my house. The West Coast Road was only opened in 1965 so much of the coast is untouched and isolated from the cities on the eastern side of the Southern Alps When I first passed through the town of Haast and the West Coast portion of the South Island a few years ago I must admit that I wasn't very impressed - it was raining constantly and the tiny biting sand-flies were murder. Though now, despite the frequent rain (sometimes lasting for a week straight!) and the sand-flies, I have come to greatly appreciate this area - the geology of the area is fascinating and the dramatic vistas of the coast, alps and rugged rainforest are superb. The mound you can just make out on the left is named Mosquito Hill. Apparently there are trees and plants species on top that survived the last ice age due to their position on this resistant granitic extrusion above the huge glacier that covered and tranformed this entire landscape. Thank you all so much for your lovely encouraging comments. I am getting quite busy and am finding that i don't have a lot of time for both photography and maintaining this blog as much as i would like to so i probably won't be able to reply to each and every comment from now on but i promise i will eventually get around to visiting your blog! Happy snapping everybody! Kaha the Kiwi has set off again on his journey around the world to see all of his AM3 friends. Keep up to date with his adventures on his own blog here. Safe travels Kaha and i hope you have a ton of fun! Thanks for viewing my photograph!
