Okuru

another taken out of the car window - this time in Okuru, an even smaller town on the West Coast of New Zealand's South Island. I think that these structures are used to hang nets during the whitebait season but I am not quite certain so if anyone knows for sure please let me know!

Thank you all so much for your lovely encouraging comments. I am getting quite busy and am finding that i don't have a lot of time for both photography and maintaining this blog as much as i would like to so i probably won't be able to reply to each and every comment from now on but i promise i will eventually get around to visiting your blog! great shot Kathryn Iwould guess that they were for whitebait nets but I really don't know

@jamesy: Thanks Deb! yeah I am fairly sure they are but having never seen them in action during the season i am not positive.

Wow that is quite superb! It took me a minute to figure out what they were and is that light layer in the middle sand? I'm sorry I'm not sure about the structures either but they make a great image:-)

@Linerberry: yeah it was a sandbar where the river meets the sea (which is just beyond it). i know this type of formation has a specific name but i can't think of it and that's scary because i studied them just last year!! hang on, i will go look it up...ok it was actually a lot more involved than i thought and i am all confused so lets just stick with 'sandbar'. haha a simple question and i end up rambling... i know the area is linked to the Hapuka Estuary and this river leads into the lagoon there - such fascinating geology in all of this Haast area. I think you are right about the whitebait nets. Has not been a great whitebait season this year, but have still had a couple of feeds!

@Maxine: cool! when does the season actually start and finish? I was so intrigued by these structures as there were some near where i lived along with a whitebaiter's 'hut' situated in the middle of the dense rainforest near the river - fully kitted out with satalitte tv of course! it was quite a shock when i came across it one day.

@Graham Russon: it seems it is juvenile fish that are caught and put in fritters and lots of other stuff (the kiwis just love it!) - here is some good info on the subject! Thanks Graham!

such a beautiful view, wonderful colors, I am pretty sure there for whitbait nets, remember seeing something similar on a trip many years ago, and asking one of the locals nearby who tole me they were, quite a creative way to do it I think

i wish the structure was reflected in the water below...it would have made it even better...but its a very good pic for one taken from a car window :)

@Joy: it is reflected a little bit but yes it would have been good if it was stronger. This image was quite tedious to take - i had to cross the one lane bridge a couple of times back and forth to finally get the angle right and not have the bridge interupting the shot. Thanks Joy!

Kathryn, I don't want to add another OWAFS (Oh what a fabulous shot) comment, even tho' it is. It is saved from being YAFSAS (Yet another FABulous surf and sun) image by the whitebait rigging and whatever that creature is swimming in the shallows below the rigging. But then, that's why you took that photo at that moment, isn't it? What is that presence in the moment that separates a truly fine image from YAFSAS images. Line 10 of us up on that spot, or 10 cars going past, and you get 10 VERY different images. I have called in the EYE. There is art in the eye and craft in the hand. Both are needed, both are essential. I do hope that my comments here engender some discussion. What is that saves this from being dross and allows us to draw out the gold instead? Ah, it's 0700 Sunday morning here and the paper just arrived. Time for coffee and the comics while everyone else sleeps. OK, all you readers out there, TAG, you're it.

@Jed: haha this is exactly the wonder that is photography - wouldn't it be wonderful also to actually see what everybody 'sees' not just what photographers photograph because isn't that what all us photographers try to do - to demonstate our unique view of the world?? mmm... you make me ponder! haha
