Warby

Posted by Kathryn (Warburton, Australia) on 19 February 2009 in Landscape & Rural.

One of the best features of my town of Warburton ('Warby' in the local slang!) is the Yarra River flowing at the base of the Valley. There is a beautiful walking track that lines both sides of the river as it flows through town and doing the hour long walk is a lovely way to spend a morning! This river begins at the Upper Yarra Dam and eventually meanders its way down through both the Upper Yarra Valley and Yarra Valley all the way to Melbourne (roughly 70kms away as the crow flies) where it then flows into the bay.

I took this image with my new point-and-shoot camera (my other camera’s screen was going psychedelic on me! Now I can compose again!!! YAY!) and as you can see we are still being inundated with smoke mostly from the controlled burns that are being undertaken either side of our Valley.

I want to apologize for my sporadic postings over the last week - the fire situation here has been much the same and I have been finding myself quite distracted and, not wanting to bore/depress you guys with the same old fire details and with only a limited choice of ‘posting worthy’ photographs at the moment due to the smoke in the valley making it unpleasant to go outside to shoot new material, I haven’t really been inspired enough to post. I am sorry if I worried you guys, I didn’t mean too, and I very much appreciate your concern! You are a great bunch of people!

On the fire situation, as I said, the calm weather has been continuing over the last week and this has been great in allowing much of the containment strategies to be put in place around many of the fires. However, 4 enormous fires still blaze uncontrolled in some heavily forested areas and there is still a lot to do to firm up the defenses before the bad weather (i.e. hot temps and strong northerly winds) comes on Monday. We are being warned that Monday may be quite bad for us and our town and that we may have to evacuate as the fire just north of our valley is quite volatile and is the least controlled of all the major blazes still burning in the state. But hopefully it will be ok! Fingers crossed!

Thank you all so much for your lovely encouraging comments. I am getting quite busy and am finding that i don't have a lot of time for both photography and maintaining this blog as much as i would like to so i probably won't be able to reply to each and every comment from now on but i promise i will eventually get around to visiting your blog! Happy snapping everybody!
